Introduction

At rise of meeting for worship recently, a European American Friend expressed concern over a recent experience with and African American friend of hers.

He had asked her not to speak against militarism with his community, because "the military has been good to African Americans, and many African Americans are very supportive of the military." Many, especially the young people, "depend upon the military for jobs to get out of poverty or other horrid situations."

Other Friends in meeting shared the speaker's concern that our society continues to sustain militarism by exploiting economic and social disadvantage.

One spoke of our government's habitual recruitment of low-income and/or minority youth as a convenient population for the military—and it's steadfast resistance to creating any other real alternatives for these young people.

Another friend pointed out that, for many, the only apparent alternative "offered" young African Americans seems to be crime and imprisonment. This population is hugely over-represented in prison, just as it is in the military.

We agreed that, if Friends are going to advocate against military recruitment of youth (in school or elsewhere), we also need to offer real economic, educational and vocational alternatives. Otherwise we are not truly listening to those for whom we claim to advocate.

This web page is a first attempt to gather some online sources of information about Youth and Militarism. Readers who have additional sources to suggest should email the information to the editor.

Thank you.

Soldiers of Misfortune: Abusive U.S. Military Recruitment
and Failure to Protect Child Soldiers

The U.S. military’s practice of targeting low-income youth and students of color for recruitment, in combination with exaggerated promises of financial rewards for enlistment, undermines the voluntariness of their enlistment.

A provision of the federal No Child Left Behind Act forces schools to open their doors to recruiters and provide the military with students’ information to undergo recruitment without parents’ informed consent.

Heavy-handed recruitment tactics and misconduct by recruiters often render recruitment involuntary, and despite government and media reports documenting misconduct in recruitment of prospective enlistees under the age of 18, protections for students against abusive recruitment tactics remain weak.

Recruiters threaten serious penalties to 17-year-old youth who have signed Deferred Entry contracts and subsequently changed their minds about enlisting, in some cases forcing these youth to report to basic training against their will.

Knoxville Interfaith Committee on Conscience and War (KICCW)

A diverse group from the peace churches and faith communities of Knoxville, TN, united in opposition to war as a matter of conscience and strategy. We do not believe in war for moral or religious reasons.

We are currently field testing the religious education curriculum for youth and young adults available through Quaker Press entitled, "Raising Conscientious Objector Consciousness Aamong Our Youth."

We offer a 30-45 minute, multi-media program called "PACE: Peaceable Alternatives in Career Education," to help young people, parents, educators, and others. PACE explores alternatives to military enlistment:

  • career training and social advancement
  • tuition support for college
  • travel
  • life altering experiences
  • service to our communities, country and world
